Courtyard - (Left)
The Jacobean South Wing
was completed in 1619, the year of the first of three visits to the Castle
by James I. - (Back Left) Tudor North Wing Stair Tower. This is the
earliest brick building in the Castle and was built during the residency
of the Ferrers family. - (Back Centre) Dating from the 13th century
(c.1220), the North Wing comprises the oldest apartment building within
the Shell-Keep. - (Back Right) The
Tower has been built within the Shell-Keep walls and dates from
c.1180 in the reign of Henry II (1154-1189). The lowest storey of this
Tower has traditionally been called the Dungeon. - (Right) The Tudor
Warder's Lodge was built by Sir
Humphrey Ferrers in the late 16th century. |
