The Tower - The Tower has been built within the Shell-Keep walls and dates from c.1180 in the reign of Henry II (1154-1189). The lowest storey of this Tower has traditionally been called the Dungeon. When the Castle still served as a fortress the Tower was the last retreat of the Lord and his men. The first floor room is believed to have been used as a bedroom from earliest times. The upper room probably served as a guardroom originally; in Victorian times it was used as a lumber room. There is an excellent view of the surrounding countryside from the Castle Tower Roof. The Pleasure grounds beyond the River Anker were extensively developed in 1930, reclaiming the very boggy land which formed part of the Castle's southern and eastern defences.
