Originally
the Shell-Keep had an intra-mural passageway all the way round the
inside of the walls, which facilitated movement. From them archers could
release arrows through the loopholes when the castle was under attack. The
narrow passageway in this wall is now cut off by the Jacobean brick wing
but note the loophole on the Courtyard side (This photo is looking up the internal
steps to the loopholes). |
