The Herringbone Wall
- The early Norman Motte-and-Bailey Castle had a palisade, a timber wall
that came down from the top of the mound to join the Lower Bailey. That
palisade was replaced by the present stone Herringbone “curtain”
Wall, (c.1180), which is said to be one of the finest examples of Norman
herringbone masonry in the country. |
