The
Great Hall
- The north wall once bore a 16th century mural of a
combat between Sir Lancelot du Lac and Sir Tarquin, but this was
irretrievably lost when the wall was whitewashed in 1752. It is known that
by 1828 when Thomas Bramall, son-in-law of the London auctioneer John
Robins, was in residence the Castle "had been furnished in a befitting
style; and many an ancient weapon and piece of knightly armour deposited
on the walls of the Great Hall, recalled to mind the days of the Castle's
bloodstained feudal glory".
The Hatchment on the upper north wall displays on the dexter side (left), the arms
of John 4th Marquis Townshend (1798-1863). On the sinister side (right) the
arms of Stuart, Marquis of Bute, father of John's wife Elizabeth Jane. The
motto translates to FAITH HAS BESTOWED THESE HONOURS ON THE FAMILY. |
